You've heard about "tax relief on donations" but aren't quite sure what it means for you? Wondering whether it's worth giving to LIFE, or how much it really costs you after tax?

This guide answers it all, with concrete figures and real examples. No accountancy degree required.

What does tax relief on a donation actually mean?

When you donate to an eligible charity such as LIFE, the French State pays you back part of it through a tax reduction. In other words: you give €100, but that gift doesn't really cost you €100.

This mechanism is called an income tax reduction. It shouldn't be confused with a deduction (which lowers your taxable income): here, it's the tax you owe that goes down directly.

Tax reduction or tax credit: what's the difference and why does it matter?

A tax reduction lowers your tax bill. If you don't pay any tax, you get nothing back.

A tax credit goes further: if the amount exceeds the tax you owe, the State refunds the difference. In November 2025, French MPs voted to partly convert certain tax reductions into a tax credit for non-taxpaying households. This reform, which doesn't cover all donations, is yet to be confirmed when you file your 2026 return.

How much do you really get back on a donation to LIFE?

For a donation to LIFE, the rate and ceiling are as follows:

Type of organisationRelief rateAnnual ceiling
LIFE and public-interest charities66%20% of taxable income

LIFE is a recognised public-interest charity. If you'd like to understand what an NGO is and how it differs from an ordinary charity, our guide What is an NGO? explains it simply. Its work includes distributing meals, providing access to healthcare and emergency shelter in 25+ countries. Your donations to LIFE qualify for 66% tax relief.

The 20% ceiling: what it means for you

The 66% relief applies up to 20% of your taxable income. Beyond that, the excess isn't lost: it is carried forward over the following five years.

Important

The tax reduction can't exceed the tax you owe. If you owe €500 in tax and your reduction comes to €800, you save €500. The remaining €300 isn't refunded, unless the tax credit reform comes into force.

What giving to LIFE really costs: worked examples

Here's what real donations to LIFE work out at, with the 66% rate:

Donation to LIFETax reductionWhat it really costs you
€20€13.20€6.80
€50€33€17
€100€66€34
€200€132€68
€500€330€170
€2,000€1,320€680

You give €2,000 to LIFE and the State pays you back €1,320. LIFE receives the full €2,000, but your real outlay is €680.

A handy tip

If you plan to give €100 out of your own pocket, you can actually give €300 to LIFE: your real cost stays the same (around €100), but LIFE receives three times as much. Three times as many meals handed out, three times as many wells built, for the same amount on your side.

Is my donation to LIFE really eligible?

Yes. LIFE is a French "loi 1901" association recognised as being of public interest, authorised to receive donations that qualify for tax relief. It automatically issues a Cerfa tax receipt after every donation, confirming that eligibility is genuine.

For a donation to qualify for tax relief, the charity must meet 3 conditions:

  • Be recognised as being of public interest and pursue a humanitarian, social or philanthropic aim
  • Not operate for the benefit of a small circle of people
  • Be run on a disinterested basis with a not-for-profit purpose

LIFE ticks all three. If you'd like to check how rigorously it operates before giving, our article on how to make sure a humanitarian donation reaches its destination sets out every criterion to check. For a structured 5-step approach, see also our guide Giving to an NGO: 5 criteria for choosing a trustworthy charity. And if you're wondering whether giving goods or skills can be as useful as a financial gift, our article In-kind vs financial donations has the answer. For those who wish to pass on part of their estate, our guide to legacies and gifts to an NGO explains every step.

How to declare your donation to LIFE on your tax return: step by step

This is the part many people dread. In reality, it takes less than 2 minutes.

The two boxes you need to know

Type of donationBox to fill in
LIFE and public-interest charities (66%)Box 7UF

Go to step 3 of your online return on impots.gouv.fr, under "Réductions et crédits d'impôt" (tax reductions and credits). Enter the total amount of your donations to LIFE for the year.

What to keep, and what not to attach

You don't need to attach any supporting documents to your return. Keep your tax receipt safe for 4 years, as the tax authorities may ask for it if you're audited. To learn all about this document, our guide on how to obtain and use your Cerfa tax receipt explains everything.

What if you forget to declare a donation?

Don't panic. You can amend your return online up to the deadline, then through the correction service open from July to early December on impots.gouv.fr.

Does tax withholding at source change anything for your donation?

Yes, and it's often a source of confusion. Since withholding at source was introduced, here's how it works:

  • January: the State pays an advance of 60% of your reduction, based on your donations from the previous year.
  • Summer: after you file your return, it settles the balance according to your actual donations for the year.

Worked example: you gave €200 to LIFE in 2025 (66% rate, so a €132 reduction). In January 2026, the State paid you an advance of €79.20 (60% × €132). In summer 2026, it settles the remaining €52.80.

If this is your first year giving to LIFE, you won't receive an advance in January. The full reduction arrives in the summer following your return.

Monthly donations to LIFE

If you give every month by direct debit, LIFE brings all your payments for the year together on a single tax receipt. You declare the annual total in one go.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get tax relief on a donation to LIFE if I don't pay income tax?

At present, the standard tax reduction doesn't apply to non-taxpaying households. In November 2025, the French National Assembly voted to convert it into a tax credit for certain donations, which would allow non-taxpaying households to receive a refund; it doesn't cover all donations. This reform is yet to be confirmed when you file your 2026 return.

What is the tax relief rate for a donation to LIFE?

66% of your donation, up to 20% of your taxable income. So a €100 gift costs you €34. LIFE automatically sends you the tax receipt, which you should keep with your records.

I haven't received a tax receipt from LIFE. What should I do?

LIFE automatically issues a tax receipt after every donation. If you haven't received it, check your spam folder or contact the NGO directly. Without this Cerfa document, you can't justify your reduction if you're audited. You can still declare it without attaching the receipt, but keep it safe.

Can I get tax relief on a monthly donation to LIFE?

Yes, absolutely. Monthly donations are added up over the year and the total amount qualifies. LIFE sends you a single annual summary. You declare the total in box 7UF.

What happens if my donations exceed 20% of my taxable income?

The excess isn't lost: it can be carried forward over the following 5 years, with nothing for you to do.
