Ramadan: WHAT ARE FIDYA AND KAFFARA?

In Islamic tradition, Fidya and Kaffara are compensatory or expiatory donations for days of fasting missed during the month of Ramadan. These donations are given out as meals to feed those who need them most 🧡.

Fidya applies to people who are unable to fast or to make up the missed days, such as people who are ill, and pregnant or breastfeeding women.
In this case, Fidya, which comes to €9 per day, means feeding one person in need for each day of fasting missed 🍚.
For example, for 30 missed days, the Fidya comes to €270.

Kaffara, on the other hand, is the expiatory donation for days of fasting missed deliberately. In this case, you must feed 60 people in need, or fund the equivalent of those 60 meals. For example, for 2 missed days, the Kaffara comes to €1,080.

Fidya comes to €9 per meal. Kaffara comes to €9 x 60, i.e. €540 per missed day of fasting.
