Understanding Eid al-Adha
Festival of Sacrifice 2026
What is Eid al-Adha?
Eid al-Adha, also known as Eid al-Kabir, Tabaski, Qurbani or the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the two greatest festivals in Islam. It commemorates the sacrifice of the Prophet Ibrahim and celebrates the values of submission to God, sharing and solidarity with those most in need.
Celebrated on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, the last month of the Hijri calendar, it marks the end of the pilgrimage (Hajj) to Mecca.
When is Eid al-Adha 2026?
In 2026, Eid al-Adha is expected on Wednesday 27 May 2026 in France, subject to the sighting of the crescent moon on the Night of Doubt.
The festival lasts 4 days, from 27 to 30 May 2026 (the days of Tashriq), preceded by the Day of Arafat on Tuesday 26 May. The deadline for entrusting your sacrifice to LIFE is the evening of 29 May 2026.
The sacrifice (Udhiya or Qurbani)
Udhiya is the ritual sacrifice of an animal in line with Islamic rules: a sheep of at least 6 months, a goat of one year, or a cow of 2 years, healthy and without defect. The sacrifice takes place between the Eid prayer and the end of the 3 days of Tashriq.
Depending on the type of sacrifice chosen, the meat is divided into equal shares:
🐑1 sheep = 1 sacrifice divided into 4 equal shares to feed 4 families in need.
🐂1 cow = 7 sacrifices divided into 28 equal shares to feed 28 families in need.
Why entrust your sacrifice to LIFE?
LIFE is a French NGO recognised as being of public benefit, authorised to receive donations eligible for 66% French tax relief. Since 2009, LIFE has organised sacrifices in keeping with Islamic rites, in more than 25 countries, with rigorous end-to-end monitoring.
In 2026, LIFE is introducing GPS tracking via email and WhatsApp: every donor receives a tracking link showing exactly where their sacrifice was distributed, with photos of the distribution. A first in France.
Eid al-Adha vs Eid al-Fitr: what's the difference?
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan (the breaking of the fast), while Eid al-Adha comes 70 days later, at the end of the Hajj, and carries a specific dimension of sacrifice.
Both festivals nonetheless share the spirit of generosity and solidarity: giving more in charity, offering gifts and sharing with those most in need.
Sacrifice in France: what does the law say?
In France, sacrifice at home is strictly prohibited by law. Ritual slaughter must be carried out in an approved slaughterhouse, under health and veterinary supervision.
Entrusting your sacrifice to LIFE is therefore a lawful, ethical and caring solution: your Qurbani is carried out in keeping with Islamic rites, in one of our 25 countries of operation, and distributed to families in need.
your questions answered

Frequently asked questions
WHAT IS THE DEADLINE FOR DONATING?
As Eid al-Adha is expected around Wednesday 27 May 2026 this year, the deadline would be the evening of Saturday 30 May 2026 (although the exact date depends on the moon sighting at the start of the month).
WHAT IS EID AL-ADHA IN MUSLIM TRADITION?
Eid al-Adha (or Eid al-Kabir) is the Festival of Sacrifice, which honours the Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him).
It is one of the two most important celebrations in Islamic tradition.
It begins with a morning prayer bringing together all the faithful (men, women and children), before the sacrifice of a sheep or a cow.
Once the ritual is complete, the meat is shared with family, neighbours and anyone in need, so that everyone has enough to eat on this festive day. It is a celebration of generosity, sharing and solidarity.
A few weeks after the month of Ramadan, it takes place in the twelfth month of the Hijri calendar and is the high point of the pilgrimage to Mecca.
WHEN IS EID AL-ADHA 2026?
The date of Eid al-Adha 2026 is set by the lunar calendar.
It falls on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar. In 2026, Eid al-Adha is expected to take place around Wednesday 27 May 2026.
How are the sacrifices carried out?
At LIFE, we make sure that sacrifices are carried out in accordance with the traditions and rites of Islam. The animals are treated with respect, in line with ethical principles.
WHY ENTRUST MY SACRIFICE TO LIFE?
Access to food is often very limited in the many countries where we work.
For some people, Eid is the only time of year they can eat meat.
Some families simply cannot afford to celebrate Eid al-Adha.
By entrusting your sacrifice to LIFE, you fulfil your religious duty while making sure these people can celebrate Eid with dignity, giving them meat for several days and a good meal to remember!
We make sure your donation reaches its destination on time, and that the animal is healthy and treated gently and with care before being sacrificed in a clean, secure place set aside for the purpose. Sheep will be at least 6 months old and cows at least 2 years old, all guaranteed to be in good health, with no visible injuries, etc.
The meat is then distributed straight away to a list of beneficiaries selected in advance on the basis of need.
WHEN WILL MY SACRIFICE BE CARRIED OUT, AND WHEN WILL I GET GPS TRACKING?
All sacrifices will be carried out between the Eid prayer and the end of the 3 days of Tashriq (the 11th, 12th and 13th days of Dhul Hijjah, i.e. the three days following Eid al-Adha), as tradition requires. You will receive your GPS tracking during the 3 days of Eid.
HOW DO YOU SET THE PRICE OF THE ANIMALS?
Sacrifice prices are fair and reflect current market conditions. They can vary from one country, or even one region, to another. We take into account various factors such as the type of animal, the quality of the livestock and where it was raised. We are committed to guaranteeing top quality and supporting every link in the chain involved in the operation, from small local farmers to regional producers, while making sure no one loses out.
WHAT DOES LIFE'S EID AL-ADHA CAMPAIGN INVOLVE?
Put simply: smiles, joy and warmth for the heart! Sounds easy? Well, we've thought of everything!
Our teams will travel across countries including France, Palestine, Lebanon, Niger, Somalia, Mali, Kenya and Uganda, making sure your donations are carefully distributed to families in need.
LIFE takes care of everything: choosing and buying the animals (sheep, goats, cows, etc.) according to local eating habits.
Your sacrifice will be carried out in a clean, secure place set aside for the purpose within the three days following Eid, in accordance with the rules of Islam. Distribution is organised to respect the dignity of those entitled to it. You'll receive a GPS tracking link for your sacrifice by email and WhatsApp, so you and your family can see where your generosity brought happiness! So that this festive day here is a festive day for them too!
HOW DO I BENEFIT FROM THE PRICE AFTER TAX RELIEF?
Under current tax law, you are entitled to French tax relief on your donation. LIFE is recognised as an organisation of general interest, which means you can benefit from 66% French tax relief on your donation. At the end of 2026, your annual 2026 tax receipt will be available to download from your donor account. It will allow you to deduct part of your donations from your taxes.
Please note that tax relief rates and ceilings vary depending on the amount and type of donation. The ceiling is set at 20% of taxable income. Use our free tax relief calculator to find out how much relief you could get: https://www.life-ong.org/reduction-dimpot.
IS OUR NAME MENTIONED DURING THE SACRIFICE?
Every year, our donors generously entrust us with more than 5,000 sacrifices.
For obvious logistical reasons, we cannot guarantee that each donor's name will be mentioned at the moment of the ritual sacrifice, especially as this is not a condition of validity.
We therefore proceed in the same way as those who carry out sacrifices on behalf of Hajj pilgrims.
One thing is certain: after years of experience and thousands of sacrifices carried out, LIFE will handle your sacrifice in the best possible way, so that it meets Islam's criteria of validity and is quickly distributed to the families most in need.
Thank you once again for standing with us.
