7 actions to take in response to the planetary emergency

We live at a time when the planetary emergency is at the forefront of everyone's minds, and that gives each of us the chance to act, at our own level, and make a real difference. Governments, businesses, local authorities and citizens alike: together, we truly have the power to shape a more sustainable world. So, in the face of environmental challenges such as rising greenhouse gas emissions, climate change and the decline of biodiversity, let's look at 7 essential actions that will pave the way to a greener, more resilient planet.
1- The vital shift to renewable energy
Leaving fossil fuels behind
The time has come to say no to fossil fuels! We can work towards a clean, sustainable energy future by supporting the shift to renewable energy and gradually phasing out fossil fuels. Investing in solar, wind, hydro and geothermal power means encouraging eco-friendly solutions and innovative technologies that are better for the climate. And all these energy sources limit our emissions of the greenhouse gases responsible for global warming.
Choosing competitive energy
Still not convinced by renewable energy? Do you think it is far less efficient than, say, nuclear power? In fact, solar and wind power are now fully competitive with fossil fuel energy production. What's more, their cost has fallen sharply over the past 10 years, according to the IPCC's 6th report.
However, these sources of electricity are not yet being rolled out widely enough for us to hope to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. So it is time for all of us to act together, starting now, to meet this challenge.
What can we do about the planetary emergency?
As a committed citizen, there is plenty you can do. You might, for example, choose an energy supplier that uses renewable sources or install solar panels at home. You can also invest in a sustainable energy project (wind farms, solar installations and so on), either on your own or through crowdfunding platforms. Every action counts, and each one helps build positive momentum for our planet! But citizens' efforts need backing too. Governments, businesses and local authorities must genuinely take action and set out on the path to decarbonisation.

2- Supporting energy sufficiency
But that's not all. Alongside developing renewable energy, we also need to focus on energy efficiency. And we can all play a part, whether as households or businesses, individually or collectively. The aim is to use less energy while keeping a satisfying level of comfort and quality of life. Here are a few ideas to inspire you and help respond to the planetary emergency:
- You could take on renovating your home: replacing windows, insulating walls and the roof. It will be warmer in winter and cooler in summer, all while using less energy. The French government has introduced several financial incentives to encourage you to do so.
- You can also choose more energy-efficient appliances, LED bulbs and so on. Installing programmable thermostats also lets you adjust your home's temperature to your needs and cut your consumption.
- To reduce your carbon footprint, avoid using a private car. Opt instead for sustainable ways of getting around such as cycling, walking, public transport or even car-sharing.
Of course, concrete policy measures must also be put in place to support every step towards energy sufficiency. Together, these actions map out a greener, more prosperous future.

3- For responsible farming and food
Our intensive farming models are running out of steam. Our food systems are ill-suited to today's challenges, in France and in many other countries. Greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, biodiversity loss, water pollution and more: they lie behind many of our problems. We must act across the entire value chain to preserve the planet's natural resources while feeding its people. It is urgent! We have the power to transform our food system and make it more sustainable and kinder to the planet.
To preserve biodiversity and revitalise the soil, we must promote environmentally friendly methods and sustainable, regenerative farming practices. This concerns and involves us all! Farmers and livestock breeders need to recognise their key role and be supported in the transition to agroecology. Food companies must change their practices. Consumers need to rethink their eating habits. We must reduce the use of chemicals in our fields and gardens, and help build a form of agriculture that feeds the planet while protecting it.
At LIFE, we support local communities in several countries in their transition to farming that respects nature and benefits their community. Through the Sapousse project, we are expanding agroforestry projects that help them build farming systems that are sustainable, productive and kind to the planet. Thanks to these projects, they are reforesting their land and becoming aware of the need to protect their environment, while developing their livelihoods.
Rethinking our eating habits
Meat production accounts for a large share of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, and therefore of global warming. Eating less meat, choosing sustainably farmed produce and eating more plant protein are all positive steps for the planet. Still in doubt about the impact of such choices? The IPCC confirms that shifting to diets rich in plant protein and low in meat and dairy brings about a major reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
4- Moving towards a circular economy
To respond to the planetary emergency, we must all support the shift towards a circular economy. In it, waste is reduced, sorted and recycled. Resources are preserved. The goods and services we produce and buy are designed to last. But that's not all! Objects get a second life. What can be repaired is repaired. Second-hand trade is preferred. Businesses are also key players in building a sustainable future. They can adopt sustainable practices, reduce their carbon footprint and report on their commitment to the planet. In doing so, they show that economic prosperity can sit comfortably alongside environmental protection. Governments, for their part, must legislate to support the movement. In France, one example is the Energy Transition for Green Growth Act, passed in 2015. This transformation towards a circular model is a shared journey towards a more sustainable future that respects our planet.
5- Educating and raising awareness about nature and the environment
Education drives change. Parents, teachers and school curricula must focus on environmental awareness, on the idea of a carbon footprint and on the impact of individual actions. At national level, public awareness campaigns must also be rolled out to mobilise society and encourage environmentally friendly practices. Together, we are shaping a generation that is aware and committed to a green future.

6- International cooperation in the face of the planetary emergency
The planetary emergency knows no borders. Strong international collaboration is essential to meet global challenges such as climate change. Financial investment is still insufficient. Binding international agreements are needed to coordinate efforts and share resources. France is actively committed to this. Among other things, it launched the Ocean Initiative at COP23. It also plays a key role in international climate negotiations (the COPs, the Paris Agreement and more).
7- Protecting and restoring nature
Our planet's wonders, such as oceans, forests and wetlands, play a crucial role in regulating the climate and protecting biodiversity. Preserving these fragile areas is essential. That means creating more protected areas, regulating fishing, fighting deforestation and restoring degraded ecosystems. Each of us is a guardian of this treasure, and it is our duty to protect it for future generations.
By taking one or all of these actions, you become a determined and vital player in tackling the planetary emergency and global climate challenges. Each of these actions, whether individual or collective, has a positive impact on our environment, and all of them help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. From every corner of the planet, we can join forces towards shared sustainability goals, building a greener, brighter future for all.
Join us, and together let's build a greener, more resilient planet.
