With the climate emergency upon us, reducing our carbon footprint has become a must. Emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases are the main cause of global warming, and their impact on the environment is becoming ever more visible. To counter this threat, we need to embrace more sustainable ways of doing things, whether as individuals, as communities or as institutions.

In this article, Planète sets out affordable steps that anyone can take to reduce their carbon footprint, along with the initiatives LIFE is running to help meet this global challenge.

Through the reforestation projects of our SAPOUSSE programme, LIFE plays a very active part in the fight against climate change. Reforestation is a natural and effective way to draw CO2 out of the atmosphere. In Indonesia, for example, we have replanted 50,000 trees, including mangrove trees, to restore the mangroves: a type of forest that stores five times more carbon than other forests. This work does more than capture carbon: it also brings vital ecosystems back to health, provides habitats for wildlife and protects the soil from erosion.

We are also running reforestation initiatives in Madagascar. There, we plant so-called “economic” trees on unused land, giving local people access to new resources such as fruit, nuts and sustainable materials, while boosting biodiversity and enriching the soil. In this way, LIFE has helped 200 families plant trees across 41 hectares, supporting both their self-reliance and the protection of the environment. This kind of reforestation therefore helps fight global warming while also supporting local economic development.

Finally, through education and awareness-raising, we encourage more environmentally friendly practices in many countries. By running training sessions on tree planting and nursery management in Madagascar, for example, we help local communities gain lasting skills and pass them on to future generations.

To fight global warming effectively, each of us needs to recognise our own role and our power to act. Individual commitment, combined with the efforts of communities and institutions, can spark real change. Every choice we make today, however small, helps build a more sustainable future that respects the environment.
