The top 5 social justice issues

So what is social justice? It means respecting the rights of every individual so that everyone can fulfil their potential on an equal footing!
Its aim? The fair and equitable distribution of wealth, whether material or symbolic, among all members of society. But social justice is also a never-ending quest, because people in need, young people, older people and women are so often left behind. Equity, inclusion, solidarity and dignity are trampled on constantly all over the world. Yet there is hope.
Together, we can set out on the path towards a fairer society. To do so, we need to understand the 5 main issues standing in our way. Each one is a challenge to take on and a chance to make progress, guiding us towards a future where social justice is far more than an idea: it is a reality.
Ending economic inequality
Across our planet, economic inequality is enormous. The gap between those with financial means and those in need keeps growing wider. With wealth concentrated in the hands of a small slice of the population, social injustice deepens and fair access to education, healthcare and economic opportunity is blocked. So how can we work towards greater social justice here? The challenge is complex, and it calls for global political will and sustained international cooperation.
Here are some of the steps that need to be taken:
- Reforming global tax systems and tackling tax havens
- A solidarity-based system for redistributing wealth, like the one in France.
- Supporting socially responsible, sustainable businesses to drive a more inclusive economy. Policies should make it easier for small businesses to access credit, so that local economies grow stronger.
- Promoting equal pay and decent working conditions.
- Reducing the debt of developing countries.
Working towards racial equity
Despite clear progress in some countries, discrimination based on a person's origin, ethnicity, nationality or race is still present across many areas of our societies. Many judicial, education and economic systems are tainted by prejudice, holding entire communities back from thriving. Around the world, racism helps to perpetuate ill-treatment and torture, as well as unfair trials.
Together, we can fight these inequalities and help to eliminate them, bringing about greater social justice. It is a constant struggle in which all of us, from individuals to institutions, can play a part.
Let's get involved in educating people and raising awareness. Let's make sure diversity is represented in our institutions: at work, in politics, in education and beyond. As citizens, we can all support anti-racist movements and, above all, question our own prejudices.

Education sets people free
Education is the cornerstone of the fair society we hope to build. It is the key to individual freedom and to social justice. The challenge is immense: millions of people around the world have no access to it. For every mind to flourish, governments and international organisations must invest in education.
How?
- By building and renovating schools and educational facilities.
- By supporting teacher training and the purchase of learning materials.
- By setting up scholarship and financial aid schemes.
- By encouraging public-private partnerships. Businesses can offer financial support, as well as expertise and technology.
- By involving local communities and helping them see why education matters.
There are several effective ways to keep children in school! In many countries, children have to fetch water from several kilometres away from their village, and miss school as a result.
At LIFE, we build clean water wells in communities in Africa and Asia. Thanks to these wells, children can go to school regularly.
Our School for All campaign also works to help more children get an education.
Through our deep commitment to standing on the side of life, we strive to build a better world where every person can live a dignified, fulfilling life, whatever divides us.

LGBTQ+ rights and inclusion
In 2022, 2,420 anti-LGBT crimes and offences were recorded by the police in France. According to the Ministry of the Interior, these figures have been rising for five years…
Yet a fair society cannot be built without full recognition and protection of the rights of LGBT+ people. By banishing discrimination and stigma, we help create an environment where everyone can live without fear of reprisals or exclusion. We are weaving the fabric of a society where love and identity know neither barriers nor judgement. All over the world, we must redouble our efforts to end these inequalities and these violations of human rights principles.
France has introduced a 2023-2026 plan to step up the fight against anti-LGBT+ hatred and discrimination. It includes financial support for LGBT centres and the opening of new ones, action against LGBTphobic bullying in schools, stronger training for the police and gendarmerie, and more.
Together towards a sustainable future
The link between social justice and environmental sustainability is rarely discussed, yet the two are closely connected. Air pollution, greenhouse gases, declining biodiversity: the heavy pressure we put on nature has major health and social consequences for marginalised communities.
These communities are hit hard by the degradation of their environment, extreme weather and resource shortages. They have fewer means to adapt, find shelter and rebuild. Clearly, global environmental problems threaten everyone's freedom and our equal ability to choose the course of our lives. Social justice can no longer be achieved without protecting the environment!
At LIFE, we work to restore ecosystems through our SAPOUSSE programme. The trees we plant help vegetation grow back, while also giving communities a livelihood: sustainable materials, fruit, nuts and more.

By taking on these challenges with optimism, step by step we will build a world where every person has the opportunity, the right and the assurance of fulfilling their potential.
Together, from citizens to policymakers, by joining our efforts and actions, we are paving the way to a future where social justice is a reality, not a distant ideal.
Join us and let's fight inequality together for greater social justice
