Wells: 5 safe drinking water towers in Benin

Access to safe drinking water in Benin remains a major challenge, especially in rural areas, where coverage is far lower than in towns and cities. By the end of 2024, around 79.4% of the rural population had access to a safe water source, reflecting steady progress driven by sustained public investment and infrastructure renovation projects.
Despite this progress, access is still inadequate in some rural areas, leaving local people reliant on water sources that are often unsanitary and unsafe, which harms their health, education and living conditions.
Daily life without safe drinking water
In several villages in the districts of Abomey-Calavi, Zè and Toffo in southern Benin, getting safe drinking water was a daily struggle, threatening people's health, education and wellbeing. More than 12,500 people relied on unprotected wells, often contaminated rainwater and makeshift ways of collecting water. Every day, women and children spent long hours walking in search of this vital resource, often at the expense of girls' schooling.
Solar boreholes that transform lives
Since 2009, LIFE has worked tirelessly to improve access to safe drinking water through OASIS.
Thanks to your precious generosity, in the villages of Houinmè Agamandin, Dangbo Koutchéhoué, Hèkanmè Houèdota, Hounsoumè Daho, Kpomè Agladokpa and Agbin Dodomè, LIFE has installed 5 solar boreholes, 50 m to 75 m deep, fitted with solar-powered pumps and 5,000 litres of storage capacity, plus a tiled water collection area with 5 taps, to the great delight of the communities.
Giving a water tower means bringing life flowing! 🫶

Lasting impact: better health, education and self-reliance
The arrival of safe drinking water brought immediate and lasting change. Waterborne diseases have fallen sharply, schools once again have proper hygiene, and families have regained time for essentials such as school and work.
Local committees, mostly made up of women, manage and maintain the facilities and keep them running for the long term, ensuring a lasting impact. 💪
A community celebration of thanks
In July 2025, amid joy and laughter, the villages celebrated their new facilities with opening ceremonies 🎉. It was an emotional moment, filled with the heartfelt gratitude of local authorities and residents. This project is a concrete example of how your donation can change lives and restore dignity.

Your support goes far beyond simply funding infrastructure: it saves lives, brings smiles back to a whole community, eases the burden on families and helps bring about lasting change. 🙏
Together, let's keep bringing water, hope and dignity to the communities that need it most.
