Community and voluntary work has proved to be a cornerstone of national cohesion in France. It cuts across social divides and weaves a strong web of solidarity and collective action. Since the right of association was re-established in 1901, the voluntary sector has flourished and now counts 1.5 million organisations across the country. These figures show just how widely people take part: nearly two thirds of French people are involved with an association in some way, and around a quarter give their time as volunteers.

This rich and varied network spans a wide range of fields, from culture and sport to social and humanitarian work. From music festivals to local sports clubs, not forgetting heritage groups and food aid charities, every sector has its place.
