Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Destiny

During the sacred month of Ramadan, not all nights are equal. One night stands apart: a blessed night, filled with spirituality and devotion. This is Laylat al-Qadr, literally “the Night of Destiny”, when believers feel closer to the divine than ever. It is one of the most powerful moments of the month, and the Qur’an declares it “better than a thousand months”. Let’s look together at why it matters so much and what it involves.
When is Laylat al-Qadr in 2026?
Every year, the Ramadan fast is marked by Laylat al-Qadr, which falls on an odd-numbered night in the last ten days of the month. That means it could be the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th or 29th night of Ramadan. This year in France it is expected on 15 March 2026, although the date may shift by a day. It depends on the sighting of the moon for Ramadan 1445 (the current year in the Islamic calendar).
What is Laylat al-Qadr?
Many verses of the Qur’an and hadiths speak of the importance and meaning of this blessed Night of Destiny in Ramadan. It is mentioned explicitly in Surah Al-Qadr (97), where Allah declares: “We sent it (the Qur’an) down on the Night of Al-Qadr.” Laylat al-Qadr therefore marks the revelation of the first verses of the Qur’an to the Prophet Muhammad.
The same surah tells us that “the Night of al-Qadr is better than a thousand months”. According to the texts, worshipping Allah on this night brings a greater reward than doing so for 1000 months! Acts of worship are rewarded beyond measure, and all sins will be forgiven. “Whoever stands in prayer on the Night of Qadr out of sincere faith and in hope of Allah’s reward, all their previous sins will be forgiven.” Sahih Bukhari: 1901
A night of deep devotion in prayer
On the Night of Destiny, believers turn to prayer with special care. They spend the night reciting the Qur’an, reflecting, making supplications and calling on divine mercy. Mosques fill with worshippers. An invisible thread seems to link believers across the world, uniting their prayers, their hopes and their devotion in an extraordinary spiritual communion.
A night of reflection and renewal
But Laylat al-Qadr is not only a night of intense prayer. It is also a night of deep reflection and honest self-examination. Believers are encouraged to look carefully at their past actions, to repent sincerely for their mistakes, to set themselves a path to follow and to renew their commitment to the teachings of Islam. The Night of Destiny offers a chance to purify the soul, to reconnect with one’s core values and to strengthen one’s relationship with Allah.

Generosity and solidarity in action
Alongside prayer and reflection, Laylat al-Qadr is also a night of generosity and charity towards others. Believers are encouraged to share their blessings and reach out to those in need. This charity takes many forms, from financial donations to volunteering and practical help for vulnerable people in the community.
Giving to people in need
On Laylat al-Qadr, many Muslims make a point of giving to people in need. Whether in the form of food, money, clothing or essential supplies, these acts of generosity aim to ease daily life for the most vulnerable. They also spread a message of compassion and solidarity. By sharing their material resources with those who need them, believers hope to earn Allah’s blessing and pleasure.
At LIFE, we support people in need in France and around the world through a range of programmes. Our 1 Euro = 1 Meal campaign provides meals all year round, and especially during Ramadan. Believers can also turn to us for all their charitable giving, such as Zakat al-Fitr, Zakat al-Maal or, for those exempt from fasting, Fidya or Kaffara. We distribute alms to people in need in keeping with Muslim tradition.
Strengthening community ties
During Ramadan, Laylat al-Qadr is also an ideal time to strengthen and promote solidarity within the Muslim community. Mosques and charities in France and around the world often organise special programmes on this night. These might include meal distributions for homeless people, clothing collections or medical camps providing healthcare to those who need it. Such initiatives strengthen the fabric of the community and remind believers of their duty to look after one another.
Nurturing a spirit of generosity
By giving in charity on Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Destiny, believers nurture the very essence of their faith. Charity is not only an act of material generosity but also an expression of love and compassion for others. By sharing what they have with those in need, Muslims follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad, who taught the importance of caring for the weakest and most vulnerable in society.
Why charity matters
In Islam, charity is one of the fundamental pillars of faith. The Qur’an encourages believers to be generous towards others and to see charity as a form of worship of Allah. Laylat al-Qadr offers a special opportunity during Ramadan to put these teachings into practice and to seek divine blessings by meeting the needs of the less fortunate.

Traditions associated with Laylat al-Qadr
The traditions surrounding Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Destiny, vary between Muslim cultures and communities. Even so, many worshippers share some common practices. These include the special recitation of certain surahs of the Qur’an, such as Surah Al-Qadr, fervent prayer until dawn, and particular devotions such as dhikr (the remembrance of God) and tasbih (reciting praise of God).
Laylat al-Qadr is a night of Ramadan of immense importance in the spiritual life of Muslims in France and around the world. It is a night when the gates of heaven open wide, prayers are answered and blessings abound. Yet it is far more than a time of personal prayer and reflection. It is a high point of generosity and solidarity towards others. All believers are encouraged to share their blessings with those in need and to strengthen community ties. By giving in charity on this sacred night, Muslims strengthen their faith, nurture a spirit of generosity and answer Islam’s call to care for the most vulnerable in society.
