Humanitarian crisis in the DRC: 100 displaced families supported

At a time when the world faces many humanitarian challenges, the Democratic Republic of the Congo stands out for a deep crisis that calls for urgent, united action to help people living in extreme vulnerability.
One of the deadliest conflicts
For several decades, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the South Kivu region in particular, has been going through a humanitarian crisis on an unprecedented scale.
This conflict, regarded as one of the deadliest since the Second World War, has claimed more than 6 million lives and forced more than 1.4 million people to flee to the outskirts of towns and cities, often with no resources and no support at all. Fuelled by the struggle for resources and territory, the violence feeds an endless cycle of brutality, leaving behind destroyed villages and communities in deep distress.
Their daily lives are shaped by fear, poverty and a lack of the basics: food, clean water and healthcare. The situation is all the more critical because access to clean water, the very source of life, is shrinking day by day, leaving already fragile communities even more vulnerable.
A life-saving humanitarian response
It was against this difficult backdrop that LIFE, thanks to your generosity, carried out an emergency aid operation in Bukavu in July 2025, bringing a breath of hope to 100 displaced families, nearly 500 people in all.
These families live in extreme hardship, often in overcrowded housing or makeshift shelters. Working with a trusted local partner, LIFE organised a distribution of food and essential supplies to bring them a little joy and comfort. Where food and basic goods are so hard to come by, this aid meant far more than a simple handout: it gave families back their dignity, strength and hope.
Through a careful selection process involving committees of displaced people, mediators and local representatives, the operation reached families in extreme vulnerability who were receiving no other humanitarian support whatsoever.
Each family received a full parcel of essential food supplies:
- 1 x 25kg sack of rice,
- 1 x 25kg sack of maize flour,
- 1 x 5L can of oil,
- 1 x 12.5kg sack of beans,
- 1 packet of salt,
- plus a blanket to get through the cold nights.
The distribution was carried out in strict accordance with the principle of non-discrimination, ensuring fair aid regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender or origin. The operation also shows how our local partners can act as community-based humanitarian responders, able to move quickly.

The words of the people we helped show the power of this work, made possible by your donations.
"In our situation, we receive no help at all. When we were told LIFE was going to support us, it was like a light coming into the darkness." Jean-Baptiste, displaced father
"We fled our village with nothing. For weeks, my children slept without blankets and ate only once a day. This parcel gave us our strength back." Aline, mother of four.
"It's the first time in a long while that I've felt someone cared. Receiving this aid has given me hope for the future." Furaha, young displaced woman
This operation would not have been possible without your generosity. You have helped to feed, protect and restore hope to hundreds of people who had lost everything.
