“From seedlings to forests: why reforestation programmes matter”. Conservation Nature’s article looks at reforestation and the various tree-planting projects carried out by LIFE.

Reading it, one thing becomes clear: reforestation is much more than simply planting trees!

Forests cover almost a third of the planet and play a vital role in protecting biodiversity and regulating the climate. Yet around 13 million hectares are lost to deforestation every year. This destruction has serious consequences, including irregular rainfall, seasonal droughts, soil erosion and the loss of habitat for millions of species. In the face of these environmental challenges, reforestation is emerging as a lasting solution.

It means replanting trees on degraded or cleared land, offering a response to both desertification and deforestation. It helps restore environmental stability and brings a whole range of ecosystem services: storing carbon, filtering drinking water, creating natural habitats for wildlife and preventing soil erosion.

Reforestation initiatives play a vital role in tackling climate change and protecting biodiversity. They also create local jobs and help develop new economies based on renewable timber. These programmes are supported by organisations such as LIFE, which runs reforestation projects in several countries through its SAPOUSSE campaign.

However, these reforestation projects require long-term commitment and careful planning, including a thorough assessment of the land, choosing the right species to plant and managing risks. To make them a success, it is essential to provide resources to local communities and to anticipate the challenges ahead.

With the growing urgency to protect ecosystems and tackle climate change, reforestation has become a global priority. Ambitious targets have been set, such as planting 30 million trees in Europe by 2030. It is a collective effort in which every one of us has a part to play in securing a sustainable future for our planet.
