RFI tells the impact of LIFE in Sine-Saloum, Senegal

In this second episode From the program “Un jour au village”, broadcast on RFI on Sunday 25 May 2025, journalist Kpenahi Traoré continues her immersion in Senegal, alongside LIFE, in Sine-Saloum, a region in the west of the country where local initiatives are trying to meet a major challenge: the rural exodus of young people.

Keur Yakaar, the house of hope

In this territory rich in natural resources, many young people leave their village to try their luck in the city. It is to respond to this phenomenon that the project “Keur Yakaar”, which means “house of hope” in Wolof, was created.

Supported by the association Vivre Yakaar, with the precious support of LIFE, this program aims to train and professionally integrate young people, especially young women, in the following areas: Agroecology adapted to the local context, sustainable livestock farming, catering and hotels or even the artisanal processing of local products.

Professional training

Each promotion welcomes around thirty students, trained for 2 years free of charge. Only a symbolic contribution of 50,000 FCFA, about 76 euros, is requested for uniform costs. “University was a bit complicated, and since I have a passion for cooking, I stopped studying law and I don't regret it.” says Sokhna Sour who is not worried about her professional future.

Some students, like Sokhna, have an atypical background and find this program a concrete path to employment. As the region is a tourist destination, several hotels recruit and offer real professional opportunities.

This program is fully in line with LIFE's mission: to empower young people to act in their region, by promoting local resources and strengthening their autonomy.
