Tax relief for donations: complete 2026 guide for individuals

You've heard of "tax relief for donations" but aren't quite sure what it means for you? Are you wondering if it's worth donating to Life ONG, or how much it really costs you after tax?
This guide answers everything, with concrete figures and real-world examples. No need to be an accountant.
What exactly is tax relief for a donation?
When you make a donation to an eligible organization like Life ONG, the state reimburses part of it through a tax reduction. In other words: you donate €100, but that donation doesn't really cost you €100.
This mechanism is called an income tax reduction. It should not be confused with a deduction (which reduces taxable income): here, it's your actual tax bill that decreases directly.
Tax reduction or tax credit: what's the difference and why does it matter?
A tax reduction lowers your tax. If you don't pay tax, you don't get anything back.
A tax credit goes further: if the amount exceeds your tax due, the state reimburses you the surplus. In November 2025, MPs voted for the partial transformation of the "Coluche" scheme into a tax credit for non-taxable households. This reform is subject to confirmation when you file your 2026 tax return.
How much do you really get back? The two rates that apply to Life
It all depends on the type of organization. Two rates coexist in 2026:
Life ONG falls into the first category. If you want to understand what an NGO is and how it differs from a traditional association, our guide What is an NGO? simply explains everything. Its missions include meal distribution, access to healthcare, and emergency housing in over 25 countries. This qualifies it for the 75% rate, known as the Coluche scheme, which is the most advantageous for individual donors.
The Coluche scheme: why this name and what it means for you
The 75% rate has been in effect since Coluche founded Les Restos du Cœur. It applies to all organizations that provide free meals, medical care, or housing to people in need, both in France and abroad.
New for the 2026 Finance Law: the cap increases from €1,000 to €2,000 in donations per year (effective October 14, 2025). Beyond this amount, the 66% rate automatically applies.
What it really costs to donate to Life ONG: numerical examples
Here's what concrete donations to Life ONG achieve, at the 75% rate:

You donate €2,000 to Life — the state reimburses you €1,500. Life indeed receives €2,000, but your actual cost is €500.

Is my donation to Life eligible?
Yes. Life NGO is a 1901 law association recognized as being of general interest, authorized to receive donations eligible for tax reduction. It automatically issues a Cerfa tax receipt after each donation, which confirms that the eligibility is indeed real.
To be eligible for the Coluche scheme (75%), an association must meet 3 conditions:
- Provide free meals, care, or housing to people in need
- Not operate for the benefit of a restricted group of people
- Have disinterested management and a non-profit purpose
Life meets all three.
