Water is the quietest necessity: you only notice it when it's gone. Yet, for a quarter of humanity, this shortage is a daily reality. Behind this figure lie sick children, girls missing school to fetch water, and families unable to plan beyond the next day. Here is the true state of the water crisis in 2026, its causes, and, most importantly, the solutions that work.
What are the water crisis statistics for 2026?
The most recent data comes from the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP), the global benchmark on the subject. It paints a two-sided picture: real progress over the last twenty years, but at a pace that is slowing down at the worst possible time.
Today, 2.1 billion people, or about one in four, do not have access to safely managed drinking water at home—meaning water that is available on-site, uncontaminated, and accessible whenever the family needs it. Among them, 106 million drink surface water directly from rivers, lakes, or ponds without any treatment.
Why do we call it a "crisis" if the situation is improving?
It is a paradox that needs to be understood. In twenty years, the share of the global population without access to water has been cut in half. Hundreds of millions of people have gained access to clean water. So why call it a crisis?
For three reasons. First, the pace is slowing down just as needs are increasing. To meet the goal of universal access by 2030, the WHO and UNICEF estimate that the current rate of progress for drinking water needs to be multiplied by 8, and by 12 in Africa. At the current rate, 2 billion people will still be without safe water in 2030.
Next, inequalities are widening. The crisis does not strike at random: it hits poor countries, rural areas, conflict zones, and marginalized populations. A resident of the least developed countries is twice as likely to lack water as someone elsewhere.
Finally, new pressures are worsening the situation: population growth, climate change, conflict and displacement, groundwater depletion, and chronic underinvestment in infrastructure.
Where is the water crisis most severe?
The crisis is clearly concentrated in specific regions. Sub-Saharan Africa is by far the most affected: according to the United Nations, only 24% of its inhabitants have access to safe drinking water, and nearly 400 million people lack even basic water services.
The consequences are dramatic and tangible. In Africa, according to the UN, 115 people die every hour from diseases linked to contaminated water, poor sanitation, or a lack of hygiene. In conflict zones like Sudan, where millions of families have been displaced since 2023, daily water shortages are exacerbating an already critical humanitarian situation.
Given the scale of the challenge, the African Union has declared 2026 the "African Year of Water and Sanitation," and a United Nations Water Conference will be held in the United Arab Emirates in December 2026. The message is clear: water is becoming a global political priority.

What are the real causes of the water crisis?
It is often thought that the water crisis is simply a problem of natural scarcity. The reality is more complex. Five main causes are at play.
- Underinvestment in water and sanitation infrastructure, especially in rural areas.
- Climate change, which increases the frequency of droughts and floods and disrupts the water cycle.
- Population growth, which increases demand faster than infrastructure can keep up.
- Conflicts and displacement, which destroy water networks and concentrate populations in areas where resources are unavailable.
- Depletion of groundwater reserves, overexploited for agriculture and consumption.
The good news is that these causes are largely human-made, which means human solutions exist.
What are the concrete solutions to the water crisis?
Faced with such a vast problem, it is easy to feel helpless. Yet, the solutions are known, proven, and often inexpensive relative to their impact.
Drilling wells and boreholes. This is the most direct solution for rural communities without access. A single well serves hundreds of people. Drilling reaches deep groundwater, which is better protected from contamination than surface water.

Training local management committees. Infrastructure without maintenance will break down. Training villagers to manage and repair their water point is what ensures long-term sustainability.
Linking water with development. The most effective projects do not stop at water: they follow up with subsistence farming, livestock, and education. Water then becomes the starting point for complete self-sufficiency.
